We are delighted to be organising an event at Upper Norwood Library to share with Andrew Sykes his experience of cycling across Europe.

Who’s who?

Meet Andrew: French teacher, writer and long-distance cyclist.
Now, meet Reggie, his bike.

What did they do?

With two European cycling adventures already under his belt, Andrew was ready for a new challenge. Exchanging his job as a teacher in Oxfordshire for an expedition on Reggie the bike, he set off on his most daring trip yet: a journey from Tarifa in Spain to Nordkapp in Norway – from Europe’s geographical south to its northernmost point.
Join the duo as they take on an epic journey across nearly 8000 km of Europe, through mountains, valleys, forests and the open road, proving that no matter where you’re headed, life on two wheels is full of surprises.

More about Andrew

Andrew P. Sykes is a writer and cyclist. He is also a lover of those quirky, humorous travelogues that meander comically from one minor adventure to the next, and so writing about his own cycling adventures seemed the natural thing for him to do.
When not writing and travelling, Andrew edits a popular cycling website, CyclingEurope.org, where you will find more information about his journeys and cycling and travel in general. For more details, visit apsykes.com, the Cycling Europe on a Bike Called Reggie Facebook page, and follow Andrew on Twitter @CyclingEurope.

Litelok now in stock – Sold Secure Gold lock weighing only 1.1kg.

The Litelok is a new product that uses a composite band rather than a steel shackle or chain/cable. The material – Boaflexicore® – is really tough and married to a Squire designed lock mechanism is it a great way to keep the thieves at bay.

Litelok comes in a number of colours and is sold in singles and pairs. Multiple locks can be joined together to make a longer loop.

Litelok is made in the UK and was initially funded as a Kickstarter project.

May Bank Holiday

April 25, 2017 — Leave a comment

We will be open 10am to 5pm on Bank Holiday Monday 1st May.

Alternatively you could go for a bike ride….

Koga Signature bikes are customised to your requirements. You pick frame size, gear system, belt or chain drive, lighting system etc but you will probably want to see a real Signature bike before you create your own so we have demo bikes for you to see in store.

Our latest Koga Signature Demonstrator is quite a bike! Fitted with Rolhoff gears and a belt drive it is a robust, high spec bike suitable for touring in the most demanding of environments.

Belt drives are clean and maintenance free. They are also tough and light. Coupled with the internal hub gears you have a combination that will take knocks and not complain or let you down.

Fully Equipped!

Like many Koga bikes, the Koga Signature Demonstrator comes with high quality hub dynamo lights, front and rear racks and mudguards. We particularly like the lights – not only are they bright and practical – there is something almost magical about making your own light!

To see the bike ‘in the flesh’ call into the shop – we are open 7 days a week. Bring some id with you and you will be able to take the bike for a test ride.

Do you want to get your bike checked over before Spring is properly sprung?

We are offering free safety checks Thursday 20th April. Book by phone 0208 670 9767 or try your luck and pop in.

We are open as usual 08.00 to 18.30 but final time for a check is 6pm.

We have a fresh supply of new Koga bikes arrived in Crystal Palace. Highlights include the Sportslady, Beachracer and XOver.

Flat Bar road bike

We have a great flat bar road bike for women – the Sportslady – in a variety of sizes. This lightweight bike looks great, goes fast and is great fun. Test rides available – though please call first as with all of the new Koga bikes, some are still in boxes and will need a bit of assembly before they can be ridden.

Crossover bikes

This year’s Beachracer is a great looking cyclocross style bike tuned for the dunes and beaches. With wide Schwalbe tyres and Tektro Spyre disc brakes this bike will go fast on sand – but is great on other surfaces too. The 2017 green colour scheme will turn eyes as you speed past! £1,399 – call for test ride 020 8670 9767.

The Xcross is another good looking cross over bike. This bike is fitted with Shimano and Schwalbe tyres and is at home on sand and plenty of other surfaces.

More bikes

We have more Koga bikes on display in store and are expecting Koga Signature demonstrators in stock shortly including a belt drive option. All Koga bikes are hand built in Holland by one technician who signs to say that the bike is ‘good to go’ – reassuring quality control with a human face!

Koga is a great Dutch brand and we are delighted to have more Koga bikes coming into stock.

The Dutch love their bikes

Holland is famous for its love of bikes and Koga is one of the best Dutch brands. Koga hand makes bikes Heerenveen – every bike or e-bike is built by a single person who signs that the bike is ‘good to go’ when it is finished. Kogas are built by Koga, not simply bought with their badge on them!

Koga make a full range of bikes – though space limits what we have on show. Some types of bike (eg off road bikes) will be available to order only.

We particularly like the trekking, touring and city bikes. When it comes to heavy duty kit, you cannot beat Koga. Mark Beaumont rode a Koga around the world for example. An interesting option for those wanting a super-robust option would be a Rohloff internal hub gear which is available on the Koga Signature range where the customer customises the bike to their needs. We have one demo in stock and are expecting another with belt drive in the next few weeks.

E-bikes

E-bikes (bikes with an electric motor to help you along) are increasingly popular on the continent. Koga make a large range and we particularly like their bikes with the battery discreetly built into the frame. We recently sold one to a long term customer and expect another in stock shortly.

More Koga bikes coming into stock

We already have a number of Koga bikes in stock but we also have more en-route from Holland – give us a call if you want to see a specific model.

The Big Pedal

March 17, 2017 — Leave a comment

We are delighted that many local schools are taking part in The Big Pedal.

What’s it all about?

The Big Pedal is the UK’s largest inter-school cycling and scooting challenge that inspires pupils, staff and parents to choose two wheels for their journey to school.

Powered by Sustrans and funded by the Bike Hub, the 2017 challenge will run from 20 to 31 March and is open to individual classes as well as whole schools.

On each day of the challenge schools compete to see who can record the greatest number of pupils, staff and parents cycling or scooting to school. A school’s best five days will determine their final position, but they can log journeys on all ten days if they wish.

For schools unable to take part in the main challenge we also have a one-day version, which can include cycling and scooting activities in the school day as well as on the journey to school.

To celebrate the finale of the challenge there is also the option to join our superhero fundraising day.

All schools will be entered into daily prize draws for rewards including bike and scooter stunt shows, equipment and storage if over 15% of your school cycle or scoot on each day of the challenge. Prize details will be announced on The Big Pedal website.

Here to help

If your child is taking part we can help with supply of bikes or scooters – we can also fix bikes but please call to book in advance 0208 670 9767.

Worried about what happens when you get a puncture? We will be running a maintenance class at the shop at 6.30 on Tuesday 21st March.

Fixing a puncture is not rocket science – but learning in  the rain at the side of the road is not recommended. Matt, one of our mechanics, will show you how to do the job and give you confidence to cycle without fear of flats .

Provided we have time, he will also give some basic maintenance tips to keep your bike running nicely between services.

The session is free but you have to book in advance. Call 0208 670 9767 to get your name on the list.
